Parenthood is full of “did you see that?!” moments as your child learns to move through the world. If you’ve ever thought about how to support that movement for any reason you’re not alone.
Pediatric physiotherapists are here to help. These are their favorite, easy-to-use tips for every family.
Let movement happen:
Give your child space to move. Place them on a firm mat on the floor. Limit time in seats, bouncers, and strollers. Floor time lets babies push up, roll, and reach. This builds muscles for future skills like crawling and walking, and is a gentle form of baby physiotherapy.
Tummy time is play time:
Start tummy time early. Do it for short periods when your baby is happy. Lie down with them. Put a toy close by. This strengthens their neck, back, and shoulders. It is the foundation for all movement in babies.
Check for flat spots:
Notice if your baby’s head looks flat on one side. Change the direction they lie in the crib. Encourage them to look both ways. Carry them often. Reduce pressure on the back of the head. This helps keep a nice round head shape.
Choose simple shoes:
When your child starts walking, shoes should be flexible. The sole must bend easily. Avoid tall, stiff boots. The best shoes let little feet feel the ground. Indoors, let them walk barefoot or in socks with grips. This is the best way to boost your child confidence.
Sit the right way:
When your baby sits, their legs should be in front. Avoid a W-sitting position, with knees bent and feet out. Sitting with legs forward helps build core strength. It supports better balance for playing and standing.
Trust what you see:
You know your child best. If you feel their movements seem stiff, loose, or uneven, talk to your doctor. Share your observations. Early support can make a real difference. Do not wait and see.
These tips support your child’s natural development. Keep activities fun and pressure low. Your encouragement is the best tool they have. Celebrate each new skill. Their strength grows with every move they make.
